Another Rambler runner of note

Post by oldrunner »

A tip of the cap to Sam Penzenstadler, Rambler track and field member who, last weekend at Notre Dame, placed second in the mile, with a time of 3:58.21, becoming the third Rambler to break four minutes, joining Tom O'Hara and Eddie Slowikowski. Sam is the 415th American to break the still-formidable barrier. Coach Randy Hasenbank, who continues to produce despite have exactly zero facilities (neither an indoor or outdoor track), is doing a remarkable job.

This was a tremendous accomplishment! Sam should be very proud that his hard work has shown such wonderful results. I watched the video interview on the Loyola website. He is a fine young man who represents the university very well. It truly is amazing what the running programs have accomplished without the facilities that most schools have.

A sub 4 minute mile is a heck of an accomplishment!

Curious, just where does the track team practice? I thought I recalled some discussion a while back about Loyola putting some money into renovating the old Broadway Armory.

I think Lu Wolf singled Sam out during a time out at the ISU game. At least it looked like him....

I saw some of them practicing in the main floor corridor in Norville (behind the ticket window) a couple weeks ago.

Swella,
The proposal to the Chicago Park District to build an indoor track at the Broadway Armory park in which Loyola would be a partner did not win approval. From a segment on the Rambler Sports Locker Show I learned that indoor practice is primarily in the halls of the Norville Center. When weather permits (probably in May) the team uses the track at St. Scholastica on Ridge. The school closed last year, but I guess LU is renting and maintaining the track.
