Coaching Carousel 2025

Post by ChicagoHooper »

Fordham has already made a move with Urgo and are now looking for a HC.
La Salle is obviously filled now with the Radford coach.
St. Joe's has to be on the clock to fire Billy Lange.
VCU is apparently about to lose Odom to UVA per the internet rumors.

In Ramblerland, Drew's name is mentioned for Iowa by a pretty dialed in reporter: https://www.si.com/college-basketball/c ... -ryan-odom

That Iowa story is interesting. They really blew it with DeVries. I think we may have more NIL monies than Iowa in the present and it looks to be a certainty next year.

If any one of you finds entertainment, interest, engagement and captivation by coaching carousel insiders, tune into #SearchSZN spaces on "X". It's been almost a nightly talk broadcast for the last two weeks. An anonymous disgruntled UMass fan with several industry-wide sources and insider guests hosts it and they hit on a lot of institutions. I know a handful of us on here tune in regularly.

A lot more will start to happen and falls into place once Virginia, Texas, Nova, West Virginia, now Maryland, and Will Wade make their moves.

Odom is officially reported to go to Virginia. Will be interested to see who VCU goes with. It's obviously a really good job.

Crazy how many coaches they've lost in the past ~10 years and haven't missed a beat. They always hit on their hires. Shaka Smart to Will Wade to Mike Rhoades to Ryan Odom. Each coach took them to the tourney and won at least one regular season or tourney conference crown. They have made the NCAA or NIT 14 out of the past 17 seasons. That's sustained excellence.

You're missing Jeff Capel to our old friend Anthony Grant before Shaka too. So current head coaches at Pitt, Dayton, Marquette, NC State, Penn State, and Virginia. Richmond as a city is much more like Wichita or Dayton or Des Moines though compared to us. Some minor league sports but really college basketball is the only ticket in town.

There are reports that Drake's coach, McColough, is going to Iowa.

Anyone think X would make a run at Porter? He'd be a good fit there.

Valentine is going to get some looks. At the very least, the athletic director better start creating a short list for his replacements if he doesn't have one already.

Is Bryce Drew from Grand Canyon going to get bigger interviews than Loyola? I certainly would think of him as a replacement. I can't imagine he wants to be at Grand Canyon for life.

Iowa officially hires Drake’s head coach, which is a smart move IMO

Now that leaves Drake open. I wouldn’t be shocked to see them look at former Rambler and current Iowa State assistant JR Blount. I have no idea if they actually will, but he’s been on his way up the coaching charts. Former Loyola assistant and current Marquette assistant…and Drake alum…CJ Rivers is also making a name for himself, but he might still be too young for his first head job at that level.

Niko Medved - Drake's old coach, just took the Minnesota job.

I am concerned about the Big East and Big Ten jobs. Indiana, Iowa and Minnesota concerned me. They are filled, which is good news. The Villanova and Xavier jobs are more attractive, but I think those schools will go to retreads rather than young coach.

I am less concerned about the Big 12, the other A10 jobs or Mountain West jobs. I think he is building a good resume, he makes comparable money to the Mountain West and a10 job. He is safe at LUC for the foreseeable future. I don't think Coach Valentine will leave for a similar job. I think Drake is a lateral step at best.
