Some thoughts on LU’s 6-10, 245 lb., JC transfer, Cody Johnson, in addition to the info on the official LU web site.
In his 1st and only year at Western Nebraska CC, Cody was one of (3) 6-10 centers. He started ahead of their 2nd year center & the other 1st year center from Africa.
He averaged 22.9 mpg (661 minutes), as opposed to the other centers who averaged 11.9 (321 minutes) & 8.3 mpg (249 minutes) respectively.
In conference play he shot free throws like a guard (82%) and he handled the ball well (17 assists, 12 turnovers).
Looking at his scoring and rebounding per minute, he compared well to LU’s leaders last year (I realize I am comparing JC to NCAA Division I stats).
PP40m:
Cody J 22.3
Averkamp 18.6
Thomas 17.9
Turk 15.6
Hicks 12.3
RP40m:
Cody J 13.9
Thomas 9.6
Osborne 8.1
Averkamp 8.1
Hicks 6.5
For the 1st time in memory, LU, has a roster that can play a true double post, with depth, with 6-10 Cody J and 6-10 Jeremy King alternating at center; and 6-8 Nick Osborne and 6-8 Matt O’Leary alternating at power forward. When King is in, the play of the very talented Chris Thomas at the 3 could add the muscle to back up King. When you add the promising Tanner Williams (if he is healthy) to this front wall, it is depth that we have not seen in a long time.
Cody’s signing was a great relief to me replacing the height & power loss with the graduation of Ben Averkamp.
Cody won’t be perfect, but if he were, he’d already be in the NBA.
So far, we are undefeated this year.

Cody Johnson
Re: Cody Johnson
Another good post. I hear that Cody has the ability to pop out and play on the perimeter as well, which is a great bonus. Hopefully he's ready for D1 - guess we will find out soon enough.
I think we all know that King wasn't ready last year (which is why he was redshirted). Will be interesting to see the progress he is making.

Even though we will have to wait to see how ready Jeremy and Cody are the D1 this post is making me really excited for the season and the potential depth we could have.

Re: Cody Johnson
Well, one thing is for sure--We are bigger than we have been. If these biggies can compete, look out for the RAMBLERS !! All this and Thomas too.
I wonder how our Defense will turn out to be.
Beaars open on the 9th--It won,t be long now for HOOPS. GO RAMBLERS !!

Re: Cody Johnson
Ahunte1,
You are right about Cody's 3 point shooting. Sorry I didn't elaborate.
There are only 6 returning MVC players who averaged over 1, or more, 3 point field goals a game like Cody, whose 3 point shooting percentage was as good as Cody's 36.9%.
All of the 6 are either guards or small forwards.
Cody is a special player in many phases of the game.
Good eye & thanks for your many good posts.
